Early Life #
Unlike the rugged upbringing of the Smash Sisters, Al’s early life was defined by the oppressive, suffocating reality of servitude.
- Chelaxian Servitude: During his youth, Al was enslaved within the borders of Cheliax. He has no knowledge of his direct, blood relatives.
-The Velvet Collar: Unlike those condemned to the grueling physical labor of the fields, Al was restricted to the quiet, suffocating elegance of the manor’s interior. He performed delicate household duties, kept as a highly presentable domestic servant whose “privileged” indoor status only masked a tighter leash.
- The Knee-High Cohort: His only semblance of a family was a small, tight-knit cohort—a “gang of knee-high assholes”—composed of his fellow halfling slaves who worked the manor alongside him.
Emancipation & The Bellflower Network #
Al did not win his freedom through a grand, bloody rebellion, but through the quiet, meticulous efforts of the underground.
The Escape: He was successfully emancipated and smuggled out of his servitude with the assistance of a covert underground network, likely the legendary Bellflower Network.
Paying it Forward: This act of salvation defined his current trajectory. His primary modus operandi and motivation for adventuring is to help emancipate other halflings and assist the network that saved him, striving to “pay it forward”.
Moral Boundaries: Despite his willingness to operate in the shadows, Al has personal limits; he is highly uncomfortable with jobs that cross certain lines, such as their current dealings involving a vampire.

Al is a pragmatist who understands the value of a good distraction.
Avoiding the Spotlight: While his companions announce their presence with heavy boots and roaring chains, Al has zero desire to be flashy; he actively strives for the exact opposite.
Symbiotic Synergy: He specifically chooses to travel with the Smash Sisters because their chaotic, highly visible combat style naturally draws all the attention and enemy attacks. This arrangement provides Al with a tremendous amount of protection while he operates unseen.
