Overview #

The Quarterfaux Archives is the most prestigious academy and museum in Ustalav. Located in Caliphas (bordering the wealthy district of Laurelight_Hill), it serves as the nation’s memory, housing hundreds of thousands of royal relics, historical documents, and genealogical records.

While outwardly a beacon of learning and preservation, the Archives are a labyrinth of bureaucracy and restricted wings. It is a place where the arrogance of the Royal Court meets the obsessive traditionalism of the Old Nobility, with both sides vying to control the narrative of Ustalav’s history.

Architecture & Atmosphere #

The building is a massive, cathedral-like structure of dark gray stone, featuring high vaulted ceilings and stained glass depicting scenes from the Shining Crusade.

• The Smell: The air inside is always cool and smells faintly of alchemical preservatives, old parchment, and floor wax.

• The Sound: A magically enforced silence dampens footsteps, making the occasional whisper or turning page sound startlingly loud.

• Security: The Archives are guarded not just by men, but by complex magical wards and “Clockwork Librarians” (constructs) that patrol the restricted stacks.

The Grand Atrium: The Iron Saint #

The centerpiece of the main hall is a massive, dormant construct labeled “ The Iron Saint: A Golem of the Shining Crusade (Circa 3820 AR).”

• Public Description: It is described as a holy avenger built by the Knights of Ozem, frozen in a pose of heroic vigilance.

The Restoration Wing #

A restricted area accessible only to senior staff. This is the domain of Stacee Thistletop, where artifacts are cleaned, repaired, and “authenticated.”

The Hall of Peers #

A genealogical library containing the bloodline records of every noble family in Ustalav.

Notable Personages #

• Stacee Thistletop (Senior Restorationist): The public face of the Iron Saint exhibit and the party’s primary contact within the building.

• Vesper (Patron): Listed on the donor plaque in the lobby as a “Benefactor of the Arts,”

• Dr. Adivion Adrissant (Alumnus): A famous scholar who once studied here. His research into the Whispering Way is currently locked in the Oubliette Stacks (Deep Storage).

• Director Kellenor Thorne: The Head Archivist of the Quarterfaux. He is a dry, withered man who cares more about the preservation of paper than the preservation of people. He wears gloves at all times to avoid “contaminating” the collection.

• Brother Silas the Silencer: A mute monk of Pharasma assigned to the Archives to ensure that the haunted objects on display do not “wake up.” He carries a censer of heavy incense and a silver-headed mace.
