Laurelight Hill

Overview #

Laurelight Hill is the pinnacle of wealth, influence, and arrogance within the city of Caliphas. Rising geographically above the smog-choked streets of Ashtown and the clamor of Barragaro Road, “The Hill” serves as the residential seat for Ustalav’s ancient nobility and the newly arrived royal courtiers.

While the rest of the city battles industrial soot and Atlantic fog, Laurelight Hill is manicured to perfection. It is a district of wrought-iron gates, gas-lit boulevards, and silence—a silence bought with gold and enforced by private guards. However, beneath the veneer of high society, it is a “cultural war zone” where the provincial traditions of the Old Nobility clash with the decadent, southern-influenced fashion brought by the Royal Court.

Atmosphere #

  • The Air: Unlike the heavy, metallic taste of the air in Ashtown, the fog here is often perfumed by private greenhouse gardens or the scent of expensive pipeweed.

  • Architecture: The estates are Gothic masterpieces, featuring steepled roofs, gargoyles that double as rainspouts, and high walls topped with spiked iron.

  • Lighting: The district is the best-lit in the city, with alchemical lamps burning amber to push back the gloom, creating long, dancing shadows that the locals have learned to ignore.

Notable Locations #

The Quarterfaux Archives #

A prestigious academy and repository for hundreds of thousands of royal relics and documents. It serves as the intellectual jewel of the district.

Ravenous #

Located on the edge of the district, this Gothic bakery and tea house is owned by Lucinda_Glaze. It is the primary social hub for the district’s elite, who gather to gossip over magically preserved pastries. It serves as the gateway between the insular world of the nobility and the rest of the city.

Lethean Manor #

The ancestral estate of one of the city’s oldest families. It is rumored to have vast, labyrinthine wine cellars that connect directly to the Vampire Underground.

The Maiden’s Choir #

Though technically its own landmark, the great dome of this Pharasmin cathedral casts its shadow over the Hill. Its bells mark the time for the district’s rigid social schedule.

Embassy Row #

A street dedicated to foreign dignitaries and the “New Money” courtiers who followed Prince Aduard Ordranti III from Ardis. This is the center of the “Southern Avistan” cultural invasion that the traditionalists despise.

Demographics #

  • The Old Blood: Ancient Ustalavic families who view the Prince as an upstart and hold to the old, superstitious ways.
  • The Royal Court: Sycophants, diplomats, and knights loyal to the Crown, often dressed in the bright fashions of Cheliax or Taldor.
  • The Service Class: A silent army of servants, butlers, and carriage drivers who know everyone’s secrets but speak none of them.

Notable Personages #

  • Countess Carmilla Caliphvaso: The ruler of the city and the undisputed queen of Laurelight Hill’s social scene. Her galas are legendary for their decadence.

  • Lucinda_Glaze: The baker-socialite who charms the nobility with her “faux worldliness” and Harrow readings.

  • Lord Alistair Stern: A retired Venture-Captain of the Pathfinder Society who withdrew from public life after a disastrous expedition to the Hungry Mountains. He is an elderly human with a clockwork prosthetic leg and a permanent scowl

  • Ambassador Xieven Cheliad: The official diplomat from Cheliax, Xieven represents the “Southern Influence” that the local traditionalists hate. He is impossibly handsome, impeccably dressed in black and crimson, and openly travels with an Imp familiar named “Brimstone”, and a socialite named Gregorius Vulpin
