Overview #
The fires of Greystove do not merely smelt ore; they seem to consume the very shadows that cling to the iron. If you want a blade that stays cold in the hottest forge, you go to Greystove. Just don’t ask about the night shift. — Rumor overheard in The Iron Lung
Situated on the smog-choked periphery of the industrial district in Caliphas, the Greystove Metalworks is one of the city’s most productive and ominous foundries. While the foundry is celebrated for producing some of the finest ironwork, architectural steel, and industrial tools in all of Ustalav, it is equally infamous for the pervasive, thick soot that coats the surrounding streets and the unsettling, rhythmic pounding of its massive hydraulic hammers—a sound that locals claim mimics the heartbeat of something ancient and subterranean.
Atmosphere & Operations #
The foundry is a sprawling complex of blackened brick, rusted iron pipes, and towering smokestacks that belch thick, oily smoke into the Caliphas fog.
The Foundry Floor: The air inside is stifling, smelling of sulfur, ozone, and wet coal. The heat is intense enough to blister skin, yet the workers are known for their uncanny, mechanical efficiency, moving in perfect unison with the pounding of the steam-driven hammers.
The “Shadow-Smelt” Technique: Greystove is famous for its unique smithing process. Ingots produced here exhibit a curious property: they retain a deep, matte-black finish that absorbs light, making the resulting steel highly prized for clandestine gear and ceremonial weaponry.
The Night Shift: The foundry operates twenty-four hours a day. While the day shift consists of standard laborers, the night shift is shrouded in secrecy. It is whispered that the foundry doors are barred from the inside from midnight until dawn, and that the rhythmic pounding of the hammers during these hours is slower, deeper, and—according to the most superstitious workers—melodic.
Notable Personages #
Foreman Rosamund Ferris: A massive, broad-shouldered woman with an unsettling “sadistic zeal” for her work. She maintains a grueling pace on the factory floor and is rumored to possess strength that defies her already imposing stature.
The Silent Hired: A cadre of faceless laborers who perform the foundry’s most dangerous tasks. They rarely speak and are never seen outside the foundry grounds.
