Caliphas

Overview #

Caliphas is the largest and most cosmopolitan city in the Immortal Principality of Ustalav. Constructed behind a natural breakwater on the northern shore of Lake Encarthan, it serves as the nation’s wealthiest and most accessible trade hub. Thirty years ago, the royal court relocated here from the traditional capital of Ardis, a move that brought unprecedented growth, prestige, and arrogance to the city.

Despite its status as a cultural center, Caliphas is a cultural war zone where the beliefs and wealth of southern Avistan clash with Ustalav’s staunch provincial traditionalism. The city is characterized by thick fogs, regular storms, steeple-like spires, and a treacherous nobility.

Districts #

The city is divided into several major districts:

• Ashtown: An impoverished and dangerous quarter known for overcrowding, unsanitary conditions, and high crime.
• Laurelight Hill: Home to the city’s elite and lavish estates like Lethean Manor.
• Barragaro Road: The city’s primary commercial artery where vendors loudly haggle over everything from jerked fish to stolen wares.
• The Cairns: A tightly packed tenement district primarily inhabited by those of Kellid descent.
• Other Districts: Blackwood, North Cushing, West Cushing, Dowell, Eskcourt, Hawthorne Rows, Leland, and Valpole.

Notable Locations #

• Castle Stryithe: The imposing seat of Ustalav’s government, containing the throne of Prince Aduard Ordranti III and the Hall of Peers.
• Maiden’s Choir: The ancient and impressively domed royal church of Pharasma.
• The Quarterfaux Archives: A prestigious academy and repository for hundreds of thousands of royal relics and documents.
• Haraday Theater: Once a popular venue, now past it’s prime, but still puts on the best shows in the city.
• Havenguard Lunatic Asylum: A hospital on the cliffs overlooking the city, run by Dr. Beaurigmand Trice, which also houses the city’s Pathfinder Lodge.
• Vampire Underground: A subterranean world of sewers and buried ground floors claimed by the city’s ancient vampire clans.
